Tableau helps users to get the data into visualistion fast. We can help the users think with this software boldly states Tableau. Tableau Desktop is the starter product from Tableau. It is a windows only application it uses the same priciples as an Excel workbook therefore making it lot simple to kick off for most users. Support for most common data sources as well as Microsoft data analysis tools all means you just connect to the data and start.
You don't need to connect to a database because, depending on the version you're using, there are also tools for working with Excel files and for cloud data sources using the OData protocol (letting you analyse small data sets as well as the largest). Two versions of Desktop exist, Personal and Professional. Personal limits connections to Excel, Access, text files and Tableau's own data formats, while Professional connects to database and BI servers, as well as online data sources using OData.
