Why Business Intelligence Fails for Your Business

Why Business Intelligence Fails for you BusinessMany organizations implement Business Intelligence programmes on the back of huge investments in IT and personnel and training and still see those Business Intelligence programmes fail. There are some good reasons why this is likely to happen and here are some of them.

Lack of Upfront Planning

A policy of ‘If we build it, they will come’ is just not good enough when it comes to Business Intelligence planning. Executive sponsorship, focussed implementation strategy and consistent intra-departmental communication are all essential if Business Intelligence has any chance of being successful.

Do the RACT Test

Before employing Business Intelligence, put it to the following test:

Relevant: What business solutions is it offering? How much is that data delivery saving in terms of cost and time?

Accurate: Inaccurate information is worthless

Consistent: The system only needs to get it wrong once to feed mistrust

Timely: Data is time-sensitive

Data Quality

Bad data leads to bad decisions. A good data warehouse is up to date with clean high quality data but the data needs to be easily checked and amended at source to achieve this.

Open to Change?

Just as the market place is constantly exposed to the forces of change, the business tools companies use need to be adaptable to those changes. A good Business Intelligence system should be one step ahead of trends allowing companies to lead into them before they happen instead of scrambling to catch up.

Can You Handle the Truth?

It’s common practice in many organizations to have a number of ‘truths’ floating around but this is something that needs to be tackled from the top down, pulling everyone on board to focus on one truth alone.

Dashboard Functionality

Yes, the dashboard should look good and be easy to use, but it must also be consistent and verifiable just as any other business tool that contributes to major decisions is. It’s advisable to apply the RACT test to dashboards.

These are just some of the factors the developers of Tableau took on board when creating this Business Intelligence platform. If you would like more information on Tableau Business Intelligence software, contact MXI today.

RACT is a good test.Another pitfall is lack of understanding on selection of right variables for BI. That is where the knowledge of business understanding will come into the play
