Impediments To Your Business Intelligence Implementation

Impediments To Your Business Intelligence ImplementationIn our business we’ve found that even if you have chosen the right business intelligence software, sometimes some organizations still aren’t ready to really use their Business Intelligence tools to their full potential. Some organizations actually find Business Intelligence difficult, a lot more complicated, and unfortunately also more costly than they had first planned for. Sometimes, an organization cannot really quantify the business value realized from Business Intelligence, and don’t get full satisfaction out of the Business Intelligence experience. Luckily, we’ve narrowed down a number of problems, which we feel contributes to a lack of success with Business Intelligence.

Do You Have A Business Intelligence Strategy?

Why are you taking on a Business Intelligence project? You must be clear on what you expect to gain from a Business Intelligence implementation, and you must be clear on how having BI will drive your specific business benefits and business value. If your Business Intelligence project lacks a goal and you can’t recognize the value, then you won’t get very far. Sometimes, organizations will look at Business Intelligence to analyse data rather than ask important business questions. Sometimes, execs don’t really understand the benefits of having a Business Intelligence implementation, and when they don’t fully buy in the project can bomb. In addition, planning isn’t always there to fully integrate Business Intelligence into the daily workings of the organization- you can’t just install it and expect everyone to use it. A framework must be in place to bring Business Intelligence into the workflow of your organization.

These problems mean an overall lack of a Business Intelligence strategy. Just like any other business development plan, Business Intelligence needs to have a strategy, plan or roadmap in place that sets out what it will do, how the organization will implement it, and how the organization will use it in the long run to drive great business results.

Is My Organisation Ready For Business Intelligence?

Readiness: have you got what it takes to implement Business Intelligence from the beginning?  There are certain conditions that need to be in place before you even think about introducing Business Intelligence. Does your organization have a framework in place for managing investment in the business? What is the quality of your data, and do you have an objective fact-based understanding of its quality? Who is going to use your Business Intelligence Software, and do your employees have a good understanding of it? Can your organization recognize the risks associated with a Business Intelligence initiative? Every business initiative poses risks – including Business Intelligence, so be sure than you can predict, discern, and mitigate them when they occur.

If these concepts are familiar to you, there is probably a lack of Business Intelligence readiness in your organization.
