Dipping Into Business Intelligence? Start Small
We find that a common mistake companies make when making their first foray into the business intelligence world is to try and make a massive system that covers all aspects of the business. Releasing an enormous application can intimidate employees and all users of business intelligence in the organization. It’s best to start with a small part of the project and release business intelligence in phases.
Introduce business intelligence in phases
By phasing in parts of the business intelligence project, you can encourage heightened user adoption and also gauge how to follow on with the project down the line. It’s easier to map out future phases for successful implementation of the project when you have learned from the mistakes of the first phase.
The successful implementation of business intelligence can win or lose the support of senior management depending on how well it goes, so it makes sense to release business intelligence in phases to minimize mistakes and disruption. Executives may not want to commit large amounts of money to a huge business intelligence project, but a pilot project can deliver benefits to a small part of the business and increase confidence in your implementation for future projects. This is the best way to win over senior management in favor of business intelligence.
Start small, but think big with business intelligence
Just because you’re starting small, doesn’t mean you can’t think big. A long-term business intelligence plan should be a broad strategic programme rather than a simple project. Set out a programme for overall management of the business intelligence implementation. It should collect groups of projects together to support broad strategic movement within the business. Because business intelligence is so complicated and reaches many different disciplines within an organization, it makes it a great candidate for programme management.
