Self service BI is a phrase which gets a lot of air time at the moment. What does this mean to the average company and how far can we go without an IT department? First of all let us consider what BI means to the average company.
Is Excel BI or not?
If I produce some workbooks, is this not self service BI? The short answer is, "of course", but presenting Microsoft Excel as the internal BI standard unlikely to advance your career, too many of us have had Excel Models which "Break" or grow to become unusable, taking half an hour to recalculate. 3. Rapid-fire -be powerful, have the ability to work with large data-sets reliably. Operate at the speed of thought.

Visualisations - present complex information in a form which can be simply understood and assimilated.
5. Accessible - allow simple distribution to the target audience in a usable form.
6. Mobile - allow access through mobile devices from any location.
7. Scalable - it should scale economically from a single user to hundreds or thousands if required.
8. Security - be secure and work with the existing security systems
9. Work with multiple data sources including the emerging nosql data sources such as Hadoop.
10. Dashboards, be able to present the information in a dash board format and allow the user to navigate through the dashboards seamlessly.
